Access to Chinese Beef Markets "A Long Time Coming"

Press Release

Date: May 12, 2017
Location: Washington, DC

On the heels of initial action under the U.S.-China Economic Cooperation 100-Day Plan, Alabama Senator Luther Strange praised President Donald Trump Friday for taking steps to promote the U.S. beef industry's access to Chinese consumers. The announcement comes following a letter signed by Strange and a bipartisan group of 38 Senate colleagues in April which urged President Donald Trump to raise the issue of U.S. beef access to China during meetings with Chinese President Xi Jinping.

"The hardworking producers of Alabama spoke, and the President took action," Strange said. "It is time the United States became a net exporter of beef again, and unlocking the Chinese market will be critical in accomplishing that goal. I was proud to take action with my Senate colleagues to make the voice of Alabama producers heard, and will continue to work with the administration to secure new destinations for American beef."

Under the 100-Day Plan, full access to Chinese markets is set to begin July 16, 2017, pending a final round of technical consultations. Alabama's cattle industry accounts for the second largest share of commodity production in the state, and generates approximately $500 million in annual revenue.
